Methodological Expertise

The actions and decisions that constitute individual mobility behaviour are complex. A distinction has to be made between the motivations for choosing a specific means of transport or mobility behaviour generally and the resulting manifestation in the form of transport. Theoretical formulations of this complexity have long been available, but so far they have only rarely found an equivalent in empirical studies designed to clarify the underlying motivations for mobility behaviour. Qualitative research methods in combination with quantitative methods make it possible to break through the previous limitations on the description of single actions and decisions. By integrating as many mobility-related decisions and actions as possible, it is possible to close the gaps in our theoretical knowledge of transport and mobility behaviour.

Building on this insight, the Department of Integrated Transport Planning carries out analyses and studies of various topics in transport planning and mobility research, based on qualitative and quantitative surveys. Our research designs are tailored to the individual research questions. The intersubjective comprehensibility and communicative validation of the surveys and evaluations are crucial quality criteria of our work.
